Lo-Quality Mage: Leveling Grind

by on Aug.25, 2009, under Mage

With my irritation with the way things had been going on my hunter, my mage ended up reaping the benefits. I had planned for her to going up to at least level 77 so she could do the necklace jewelcrafting quest stuff but with Cataclysm announced, I’ll probably push her up to 80 along with my rogue. I went into Wrath with four level 70s and I want to be heading into Cataclysm with six level 80s. Considering that my next lowest characters, not counting my Death Knight, is around level 30, this may be a tall order.
Granted, having the heirloom shoulders and staff made leveling my mage a lot easier. That and having a close to max-out tailor available to make gear has kept her pretty level appropriate even as she moves up. I may pick up the heirloom chest as well and then she’ll really be flying.

So I started the weekend barely into level 73, puttering around in Dragonblight. I made sure to grab as many of the FP as I could. I didn’t do the Wrath Gate chain, but I’ll probably go back to it since I still think that was a pretty darn cool cutscene. But as soon as I hit level 74, I moved over to Grizzly Hills.

To be honest, it’s not that I liked Grizzly Hills all that much, I don’t enjoy most of the quests in the area. I just want to stay as close to level appropriate for any given zone to allow for the best leveling. The only really interesting thing here was that I had been sitting down, eating some food and drink, when Grocklar came up behind me and flattened me. I immediately switched to my hunter, flew over there, and killed it to help myself on the way to the Northern Exposure achievement.

Back to my mage and I continued on my way. I did a lot of the western quests, then made my way over to the eastern side. Where I immediately ran into Syreian the Bonecarver who managed to kill me as well. This time, by the time I switched back to my hunter and flew there, she had despawned. Or maybe someone else got her. Either way, in the space of 24 hours, my mage managed to find two rare elites where my hunter spends months at it. It drives me nuts.

Later in the weekend, I finally hit 75 and moved over to Zul’Drak. As opposed to Grizzly Hills, I actually enjoy quite a few of the quests in Zul’Drak. Plus, I like the various troll gods you run into, each with just something a little different you do for each. Also, there’s the quest that has you “surveying” the area which allows you to explore most of it, which makes getting the Explore Zul’Drak achievement rather easy to get. And yes, somehow, someway, my mage runs into Gondria while she was there. But as I mentioned, my hunter has never been a BM hunter, and Gondria isn’t part of the Northern Exposure achievement. I’m just starting to wonder if my mage has “rare elite bait” written in her code somewhere.

Unfortunately, a guildmate needed help last night on a really, really annoyingly difficult quest. So by the time I got back, I came within a bar of leveling to 76 when the server shutdown notice came up. I did get beat up enough that I managed to swing the Ultimate Triage achievement. Rather easy when you’re sitting there with 27 hp. I should top 76 tonight and probably it’s on to Sholazar at that point, the other zone I really enjoy.
