Lo-Quality Hunter: Weekend Wrap, Old School Edition

by on Aug.17, 2009, under Hunter

Well, another weekend where I didn’t quite get much done. Been busy in real life and the few times I was on, I didn’t get into any raids. So it was mainly doing dailies for the most part, trying to increase my financial reserves. Can’t argue with making more money.

I did get a few more tries at Trial of the Champion. I did get one chance at the Heroic, which went well. Then I did a couple of regular ones, managing to get the Trial of the Champion achievement. There was a ring I briefly considered but our other hunter needed it more than I did, it was only a small upgrade for me. A lot of tanking gear did drop though, wish I had been on my warrior for it.

And then for some reason, I decided to go and work on Kurenai reputation back in Outlands. It didn’t take me long until I managed to work my way to getting my Oh My, Kurenai achievement. Which didn’t excite me much until I realized that I could buy several mounts for decent cost. Not that I needed the mounts, but it was enough to net me the Leading the Cavalry achievement and a nice new flying mount.

Then Saturday, the Plush Kitty Toys were just messing around when someone suggested we go hit Onyxia before she changes in the upcoming patch. While I hadn’t been playing WoW from the beginning I was on early enough where Onyxia was a big thing. Now that I occasionally do 25-man raids, I have no idea how the heck they were able to get 40-man raids together. But needless to say, I never got into any of the 40-man instances.

So the PKT went in with two hunters, two priests, a death knight, and a paladin acting as a tank. The fight is relatively straightforward and while none of us had done it before, we have done enough raiding to know basics. So as soon as the tank engaged, the hunter and I moved to the sides to attack with the death knight going to her rear flank. The two priests flanked the tank, far enough back to not get hit by the swipe but to the side and out of the cone attacks while still being able to cast heals on everyone.

In the second phase of the fight, she takes to the air and a bunch of spawns show up and attack. Well, at level 80, the spawns aren’t quite as dangerous as they are at level 60. While we did keep them off the healers a bit, the other hunter and I focused on Onyxia herself and was able to push her through to phase 3 rather quickly.

Phase 3 was pretty much like phase 1 with the added fun of an occasional aoe fear. But as I said, we’re pretty used to tactics so the hunters used their feign deaths and misdirects to keep the aggro on the tank. The death knight had a slightly harder time but his main used to be his rogue so he was used to sometimes pulling aggro, except he could survive it this time. The tank was alert and usually was able to taunt Onyxia back to himself. So it didn’t take much more and Onyxia was no more and we had our Onyxia’s Lair achievement.

So now that we had that done, we decided to go play in another classical raid. We decided on Zul’Gurub, which I had done parts of before but not the whole thing. The PKT actually did try it during Burning Crusade when most of us were in our 70s. Of course, at that time we really didn’t have much raid or even dungeon experience. At the time, I think we went in maybe a dozen people and ended up wiping.

This time, with 6 80’s, it was no problem. We did take out several of the bosses, mainly because I couldn’t remember which ones had the mounts. We did wipe once, on Jin’do the Hexxer. I didn’t realize that he did some mind control totems, all I knew was that our tank had lost aggro and I was busy helping to keep our healers alive. And it didn’t help that we didn’t clear the area first. But we went in again, kept an eye out for the mind control totems and ran through him no problem. Hakkar himself also went down and we got our Zul’Gurub achievement.

I don’t know how much “classic” content we’ll hit but we’ll probably hit a few more the next time we have a couple of us on. Molten Core or Upper Black Rock Spire might be fun. I’ll guess we’ll have to see.
