Lo-Quality Hunter: Now With Fewer Deaths!

by on Jul.30, 2009, under Hunter

Yup, we went back into Ulduar once more. But first, I logged on a little earlier since I couldn’t quite remember what time the raid was supposed to be. Plus, it takes a few minutes for my computer to “settle down” before I start really playing. Until I do, it’s weird bursts of lag or strange noises from my laptop. In many ways my laptop is like myself, it takes awhile to get itself straightened out after waking up.

So I killed time by the age old tradition, I fished. I figured if I was going to be dying so much that instead of providing straight dps, I’d provide indirect dps via a few fish feasts. So I flew through Grizzly Hills, Borean Tundra, and Scholazar Basin fishing up the mats.

Eventually it was time for the raid. Fortunately, it take quite as long to get everyone together, even though we did have to replace a few spots. Unfortunately, because we hadn’t beaten Kologarn himself, the mobs on the way to him reset. This time, all went smoothly with the sheep pulls. And then came the overseers. This time they mentioned “oh yeah, when that big disco ball thing comes out, get out from underneath it.” If they had mentioned that part last night, I probably wouldn’t have died quite as much.

Then we got to Kologarn himself. Assignments were handed out and we went for it. And wiped. Twice. This time, the wipe was primarily caused by the tank handling the adds dying. After he died, although we had a backup tank, some of the adds would break free, usually aggroing on our healers. And it didn’t take much to kill some of the healers. And since the healers went down, the tanks went down, and then the rest of us.

So we adjusted. Among other things, I put my Aspect of the Wild up to help with the damage from the shockwave Kologarn was doing on the raid. As soon as the adds popped up, the ranged dps group pretty much laid into them. Again, I seemed to spend a lot of time running from those darn eyebeams. And when they did, I made darn sure that I wasn’t dragging them through the raid. I doubt I had done so the previous night but I wanted to be absolutely sure. I believe we wiped at least one more time and we were getting a little frustrated.

But we were getting a whole lot closer. And we managed to succeed on the next try, although I did die once again. In this case, I had moved over to get close and help dps down the adds when the eyebeams popped up. I wasn’t fast enough to turn and get out of the way and went down. However, since Kologarn also went down, I could live with that.

We then moved over Kologarn’s body to go loot. And naturally, someone managed to fall off the bridge and die, and much mocking he did receive. As for loot, a nice trinket dropped, but I didn’t win the roll. A cloth piece also dropped that many people wanted. In fact, one of the priests offered the roll winner 5k gold in exchange for the item. The guy barely hesitated and took him up on his offer. Who says you can’t buy some of the high level drops?

It was then decided to face the Assembly of Iron next. (And naturally making fun of the guy who fell off last time since we now had to go back across the bridge.) Assignments were handed out and again we sallied forth. And wiped.

I’m not sure what happened. I do know that I saw the power rune drop and Stonebreaker was still standing in it. So I don’t know if the tank had gotten stunned, or didn’t hear us, or didn’t see the power rune, but he went down and then Stonebreaker was among us.

We tried once again and this time I think it was a fusion punch that spelled the tank’s doom. At this point, we started losing people. We managed to get replacements but when one of the people being replaced ended up being our only warlock, it usually meant a long run back for a couple of us to go summon them. Again we tried and wiped. We rotated the tanks around and tried again. This time, while it lasted longer, at some point we started losing people rapidly and we wiped.

At this point, several people needed to leave or had to leave soon and the raid was called. I don’t know if they are going again tonight or not, but we’ll see. I do know they formed up a 10-man Ulduar. I wasn’t invited, but then again, I probably would have only been able to stay for an hour or two. I’m lacking sleep as it is.
