Lo-Quality Hunter: A Buggy Raid

by on Jul.24, 2009, under Hunter

Got back on and we went into Ulduar once again. So of weird doing it two nights in a row, but a nice change of pace. And we picked up where we started, Hodir. As I mentioned, I’ve actually done him in the past but for some reason, we were just having issues left and right.

And it wasn’t anyone’s fault in particular. People would suddenly disconnect in the middle of the fight. We’d get hit with the flash freeze, getting the ice block graphic and everything, but we were all on the ice. We immediately came out of it, but it was enough of a distraction that it confused people.

Several tries and we still couldn’t get it. One of the warriors then switched out with a DK, which gave us a boost to our dps but we were still having issues. I’m not exactly sure how we eventually got past it but we spend a good part of the run on Hodir and it just seemed harder than normal for some reason.

Next we went up to the Iron Council. This was again one of the few bosses I already knew and as far as I could tell we had no problems with it. Each boss went down in turn and we didn’t wipe at all this time.

Then we went up against Ignis. This one was a new one for me. I did read up on it so I had some general idea about the fight but I still had them explain the fight in case there was something I missed or misunderstood. The fight was mainly a tank and spank with some adds that needed a particular tactic to destroy. It mainly needed a critical strike doing over 5k dmg in one shot. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the only way I hit those numbers is generally a kill shot critical. As a hunter, I’m very good at sustained dps. Even being survival, people sometimes expect burst damage from me, which is true to extent. But even my burst damage is rarely one of those “big, massive shot” types of things.

Anyway, this encounter turned out to be buggy for us as well. During one try, the adds wouldn’t die even with our shadow priest doing massive 5k+ damage to them in a shot. A second time, people would disconnect, including the tank which makes life rather hard for the rest of us. I know somewhere in the middle of that, I did mention to get the Hot Pocket achievement.

Actually, the weirdest part was that I finally got a new headset which allowed me to actually speak on vent and be heard. Took awhile to get used to it, I rarely say anything because of past issues with my mic. I had to remember to mute my mic if I was eating or yelling at my cats. I also had to remember to verbalize when certain events happened like being dropped into the slag pot. It’s also kind of funny seeing how many different ways people pronounce my characters name but that wasn’t such a big deal.

Well, despite the issues we kept having, we kept ramming against it. We eventually did down Ignis, netting me my The Siege of Ulduar achievement. But at this point, a few of us had to leave, including our two healers. A little disappointing only doing three bosses, two of which I’ve already done but it could have been worst.

Tonight should be Freya and Thorim. Thorim I’ve done before, but Freya will be new. Not sure if we’ll go beyond that, but it’ll be nice to try. I also know they were talking about possibly doing an Ulduar 25 at some point. There were indications that they wouldn’t have enough people from their guild itself and they might invite a couple of us PKT’s along. That should be interesting. I’m almost afraid to see how some of those fights are in their 25 man versions!
