Lo-Quality Mage: Crappy DPS and Level 71

Some guildmates decided to run Utgarde Keep on normal mode and wanted to know if I wanted in. Since I didn’t need Aleania to tank and neither was Keyalnon needed to shoot things to an inch of their life for the instance, I decided to use Phaeledra since she was getting close to getting to level 71.
Now, the one thing I didn’t realize while Phaeledra was growing up through the levels is that she never really ever went into any level appropriate instance before. So besides the fun game of “what button does this doâ€, I also never quite figured out the best way to maximize my dps. During PvE, it’s not as much of an issue since you just blasted away to kill the mob as fast as you could, you didn’t worry about “…30 seconds into the fight…†point.
As I’ve mentioned, my hunter does rather decent dps and I know how to play him while drunk or half asleep. I’m used to being rather high in the dps and damage charts. Phae? She beat the healer and that was it. She was hitting around 550 dps in general. It was annoying me to no end, except I don’t know Phae enough to figure out a way to make her better.
But it was interesting still. For instance, I’ve done Utgarde Keep as both my hunter and warrior, so I know that tank roll to an extent and while dps is a general roll, doing it as something other than a hunter changes things. For instance, on Prince Keleseth, I could stack right up on the tank and still be effective. I’m so used to standing a bit away and also dealing with the adds. And Ingvar, there’s a point when he roars and you have to stop spellcasting. Well, my hunter couldn’t care about that but as a mage I actually had to pay attention to the DBM warning for that.
Of course we finished it. Only two of us were actually level appropriate for the instance, the others were overpowered for it. (Including the tank and healer.) But Phae did get her Utgarde Keep achievement. Also managed to get some decent loot, which I still need to sort out.
Unfortunately, I still was shy of 71. But I actually like Howling Fjord in general more than Borean Tundra. So it was easy to run several quests and finally hit 71. Except now I have this wonderful new talent point and no idea what to do with it. I probably need to respec anyway, I don’t think my “er, I think that works†method of assigning points. Considering I’ll respec to reassign one point on my hunter, maybe it’s time to actually start paying attention to my alt builds. Oh well, we’ll see after tonight’s Guild Naxx run.
