Lo-Quality Hunter: Getting Spanked by Malygos

by on Jul.16, 2009, under Hunter

Yes, I once again ventured into the Eye of Eternity and got smacked around like the drunken idiot I am by Malygos. Okay, wasn’t really my fault. It was just a combination of things. Frankly, Eye of Eternity is a darn hard fight, harder than most of the Naxx fights and some of Ulduar ones, and the rewards aren’t worth it with Ulduar around. But as one of the raid members said: “It’s not about the loot. It’s the pride of being able to say you down his ass!”

The funny thing is, I put myself up for Eye of Eternity in LFG for the heck of it. I really wanted a Naxx 25 or some sort of Ulduar run. But I got a whisper from a guy who’ve I’ve run several instances with. This is where relationships come in. I genuinely trust him as a tank and I feel he runs a good group. Conversely, I believe he feels I’m a decent dps who generally knows what I’m doing. He occasionally will even invite me to something out of the blue, which I appreciate. So unless I’m scheduled for something with the guild or I’m in the middle of something, I generally will join up with him without reservation.

We were a bit hampered though. Whomever’s vent we were using was particularly flaky, booting people at odd times and then refusing connections. And there was a healer who I considered to be rather whiny in the group as well. One of the first things I hear out of him? “Why do we need vent? You’ve all done this before right?” Now first off, the Malygos fight is complex enough that even a tight guild raid group benefits from using vent for the fight. Secondly, we were a PUG and a couple of members had already mentioned never doing the fight before or only watching the video. Yeah, if I’m with my guild we don’t use our vent for vanilla runs because we’re used to each other and generally know what the other will do. For instance, the healers in our guild usually knows to stand somewhere in front of me so that I can see if an add attacks them and they know that I’ll immediately blast it off them. Hey, I’m dps, so I can die but with a healer dead, bad things happen. But in a PUG, you just don’t have that level of familiarity to pull that off.

I’ll grant that he probably did have a legitimate complaint on our first try, that he was doing most of the healing and he can’t do it himself. However, he did it in such a way that I felt was insulting to the others. Especially since it turned out it was a miscommunication on who was doing what in the group. A couple more tries in, we do make it all the way to phase 3 but again, some miscommunication and unfamiliarity with the dragon controls cause problems. The whiny healer finally leaves, I was under the impression that he thought it was a cake run and that somehow we were some elite group who could breeze through it but felt we needed his exalted healing presence for some reason. (What can I say, he rubbed me the wrong way.)

We do replace him and go again. The next time we make it to phase 3, for some reason my UI got messed up and I couldn’t access the dragon ability bar! So naturally I die rather easily since I could neither attack, protect or heal anything. A couple more tries but we then give up. That’s one thing about EoE, it’s just one big fight, so either you kill the big worm or you don’t , but if you don’t you’re not locked.

I then got into an Obsidian Sanctum 10 man run. Remember when I talked yesterday about a balanced raid group. Well, I was pumping out a decent 3.1K dps rate and was sitting at third on the chart. Above me? A death knight hitting 4.4K and a druid at 4.1K. Major discrepancy between the top and bottom outputs. Oh well, it more than compensated for the fact we did it really with only one tank. I thought we’d be short-manning it but they found another dps. Otherwise, a straightforward run.

One of the drops was the Signet of the Accord Since it was a BoE item, they let us all roll on it and I managed to win the roll. So my warrior is getting a shiny new ring to wear!

Otherwise, it was a rather quiet night. I got a few dailies done and then spent some time on my mage. But I only did one or two quests and mined an ore with her, definitely nothing to write about. We’ll see if my hunter can get into some interesting raid tonight…
