Lo-Quality Hunter: Getting Back in the Groove

by on Mar.13, 2009, under Hunter

Almost a month since my last writing. That’s partially because the computer that has all my web publishing software finally just gave up and it took awhile to repair. And once I got it back, I just wasn’t playing WoW as much. And when I did play, I didn’t really do much. My hunter is mainly at a point where he’s just doing the waiting game of well, waiting for something interesting to come along and do…
So let’s see, what have I done since the last posting? Not much. I did get invited to a partial Naxx run. It ended up being the construct quarter, which I hadn’t done before so it wasn’t all bad. Patchwerk wasn’t that bad a fight. Gluth was interesting because they assigned me and the other hunter to play with the adds. Fortunately, I remember watching a video previously so I had a general idea of what I needed to do and otherwise I just followed the other hunter’s lead. He even complimented me afterwards, which was rather nice of him. I was a little concerned because the other hunter was the top dps while I kept trading 2nd and 3rd place with a mage and I wasn’t sure if they could take Gluth down with the two of us playing tag, but it all worked. Grobbulus did cause a wipe when the tank turned him the wrong way briefly and caught a good portion of the raid in the wrong spot. But even he went down.

It was then when the raid got a little odd. It was late for most of the members, so one guy dropped out. But we were almost at Thaddius. So came the debate, keep going with just 9 or try to grab a 10th? Fortunately they came to the conclusion I agreed with, that pulling someone in for the 10th spot when we were almost calling it a night was rather rude. We figured we’d try it a few times then if we needed to, we’d see if we could get a 10th but letting them know it was a one-boss thing.

Now the Thaddius fight is sort of interesting. The first part is killing the two mini-bosses within a few seconds of each other. Complicating the fact that unlike other bosses that requires that sort of fight timing, the mini-bosses are on two separate platforms and you can’t really support the other group. Meaning it wasn’t a matter of just switching targeting, it was a matter of regulating damage done to keep it about even. And with 9 people, it mean we only had 5 dps to split. So they put the other hunter and the 4th and 5th dps in one group, while me and the mage in the second group with the tank who did the higher general damage. Even then they did outstrip us a bit. Fortunately, they pulled back just enough that we pulled even. The mage and I still had to go all out near the end but we did it on the first try.

After that, it’s Thaddius himself. The oddest part is the very first thing you do is jump to his terrace from your platform, and if you miss, we’ll that causes some added fun. Thaddius does a polarity shift thing, meaning you’re either positive or negative “charged” during the fight. If you stand by people of the opposite polarity, you cause damage to everyone but if you’re with people of the same polarity, you actually do more damage. Now, the people who jump and miss the terrace? They sort of get a “third” polarity in effect. Makes it very exciting. And of course, one person missed the jump. But we still go for it. That is, until I noticed I’m taking loads of damage from someone. A quick glance shows that the other hunter had moved to the wrong side with his polarity charge and before we could get him shifted, two or three of us dropped and that was it.

So we setup once again and go for it. Again, the mage and I are a bit outstripped at the start but the group adjusts and the two mini-bosses go down right on schedule. We then jump and everyone makes the leap! Then comes the fun game of shoot and moving around to the correct polarity side. Later I read that technically you should do a counter clockwise run around but for the most part we ran straight through him. Fortunately our healers were up to the task and we were able to do survive the brief moments of damage caused by us running through the boss. But Thaddius goes down and I get my little The Construct Quarter achievement. There’s a brief moment of hilarity when some people accidentally teleport over to Sapphiron but otherwise, for a quick pickup, it was rather satisfying.

The rest of the the past few weeks was spent doing stuff like working the dailies after switching from the Oracles to the Frenzyheart. And silly stuff like finally getting the Mine Sweeper achievement. Yes, I’m at the point of insanity.

But that brings us up to the present. Keyalnon finally got his leatherworking up to 450, primarily because of special orders from a few of the guildmates. Then he went and did a Nexus run as I try to get his Proof of Demise achievement list filled out. The main source of aggravation for this jaunt was the healer’s unfortunate habit of disconnecting at odd times. I also managed to get killed during Ormorok again, and again it’s when the tangler grabs me just in time to have a crystal spike up the rear but I can’t really blame that one on the healer. It’s a quick in, out, and walking away with 5 more emblems, which would mean more to me if I was saving them up to buy something. But after doing the Frenzyheart dailies, it was then time for Aleania to go and bang on things
