Lo-Quality Warrior: Wrathgate

by on Feb.10, 2009, under Warrior

I still remember when Burning Crusade came out. Stepping out of the portal, you were greeted by the sight of some very, very big things thrashing around in battle. The landscape in Hellfire Pennisula was pretty cool and the risk of essentially falling off the planet was also interesting. Each new area was pretty cool and having to deal with new factions to get rep with was neat. But through it all, there really wasn’t any particular thing I could talk to others and encourage them to do. Well, in Wrath of the Lich King, that wasn’t the case. If you do anything, I encourage everyone to do the Wrathgate quest line at least once in your playing. You’ll enjoy it.
But first, I wasn’t quite to that point yet. I did go to Fordragon but I forgot there’s a brief quest in between that you do to get Wyrmrest along for the ride. It’s a relatively simple quest, so no problem there. I also run and do a couple of others to give me some extra xp as well. Why? Because at times I have a theatrical moment in my brain. I’ll explain in a bit.

So anyway, you do the quest and you’re told to head back to Fordragon Hold and tell Highlord Bolvar Fordragon about your victory over the Scourge. As soon as you do that, there’s a brief flash of you getting the Veteran of the Wrathgate achievement and then you’re into the cutscene.

I don’t want to spoil it for you, I suggest you wait until you go through the quest chain itself. If you really want to see it, I know the video is up on various site and can actually be found on your computer if I recall correctly. But I think it’s cooler if you do it as a natural part of the progression. And once it comes up, turn up the sound a bit (maybe you don’t have to, my sound settings are always a little dodgy), sit back and enjoy the event unfold.

Well, after you come back to “reality”, there still a few more things you want to do before calling it a night. For Alliance, you pick up a quest to head to Stormwind. While there, you’re sent with Jaina Proudmoore to go visit Orgimmar to have a talk with Thrall. And of course, since you’re in a horde city, your PVP flag pops up. Don’t worry, there isn’t a bunch of horde players waiting to gank you. Jaina and Thrall have a talk, which gives you a bit more information. It’s nice to sit back and just listen although I’m pretty sure you can skip most of it.

For reasons I’ll let you discover for yourself, this leads you to a point where you’re going to go with King Varian Wrynn and Lady Jaina Proudmoore to go and assault the Undercity. This is another cool “event”. I’m not sure you can die, the King is a massive tank and Lady Jaina is healing you like crazy but be careful regardless. I do know I had a heartattack moment when my hunter manage to suddenly pull aggro of a bunch of the mobs off the King. I’m actually pretty sure you could just walk around, following the two and let them do all the work, but where’s the fun in that?

Of course since my warrior is protection spec, I have all these neat little things that pull aggro and I made very sure not to hit them. You romp through the Undercity, listen to the story, and eventually find yourself back in Stormwind. You get a nice trinket and pair of pants to boot. Cool eh?

Oh yeah, and remember about the theatrical moment I mentioned? Well, in addition to the trinket and pants, I had calculated it correctly and I managed to level with the end of that quest chain. It’s a little too bad there isn’t some sort of “automatic” level at that point, but tacking on the level at the end of it just seemed “appropriate” for those events. So why are you sitting here reading this? Go out and follow the quest chain yourself and immerse yourself in WoTLK for a bit.
