Lo-Quality Warrior: Not As Clever As I Thought

by on Feb.09, 2009, under Warrior

I logged in to my warrior with the intent of tweaking my “dps” setup better. Then I made the mistake of checking my achievements for some reason. And I notice I’m very close to getting 130 quests in Borean Tundra, which is the requirement for the Nothing Boring About Borean achievement. I can be so predictable sometimes…
So naturally I found myself in Borean Tundra, trying to think of quests I hadn’t done. I find a couple on Coldarra to do, making note that there are also a couple of Nexus quests that I need to pick up and complete some other time. Then I find a quest chain at Fizzcrank Airstrip that I somehow managed to skip. And it’s in doing that chain that I get the quests needed for the achievement. Yay! Now what?

Well, I then head back to Dragonblight to finish off quests there. I also start tweaking my fight macro. It takes several tries and I’m finally seeing dps outputs in my battle and berserker stances similar to my defensive stance dps numbers. And I’m happy for awhile as I rampage through the area. That is, until I realize that I still suck at dps in reality.

What do I mean? Well, my defensive stance, among other things, decreases my damage output by 10%. Which means that if I didn’t have that decrease in damage, my defensive stance setup would still be blowing away my other two stances. Plus, because defensive stance also increases the damage I absorb by 10%, I actually last longer than I do in either of the two other stances.

Why don’t you just respec fury or arms then? One reason is, I hate respecing in the first place. Something always seems to go wrong when I’m placing points. Either I accidentally double-click and put two points in when I mean only one, or I click the wrong icon, or my cat jumps on my keyboard. Something happens and I end up wasting gold to respec again. Two, I still like being able to do my duties as a tank at a moments notice. There’s still the time it takes me to get out my tank gear and put it all on, but if I had to add time for a respec as well? And lastly, I’m just sort of pig-headed anyway. My warrior is still pretty effective soloing, even in defensive stance and I had no pressing need to make my battle or berserker stance work better. It’s just a quirk of my personality that I was even trying to tweak them.

So I run through a couple of quest chains in Dragonblight. I manage to get the one that leads to Fordragon Hold which I believe will eventually lead to the Wrathgate event. However, it’s getting late and I decide to instead fly off to Howling Fjord to get rid of a few quests still sitting in my log. Mostly “breadcrumb” quests but one does take me over to Fort Wildervar, which I forgot to visit earlier to grab the FP. I also decide to do the quest The Cleansing where I find that my Inner Turmoil is kind of a wimp. What I didn’t notice when I did this quest on my hunter is that after you do it, you “lighten your soul” for a bit. This acts as a 3 minute Slow Fall effect on your character. Which allows my warrior to jump off the mountain and spend a relaxing 2 minutes falling across the map. I guess it does help to check those odd buffs that appear every so often.

But as it’s getting late and a busy work day ahead of me, I decide to call it a night. I probably should finish up some more Lunar Festival stuff while I can. Maybe a nice relaxing tour of the horde cities…
