Lo-Quality Warrior: Still Figuring It Out
by lqwow on May.27, 2010, under Warrior
Another night off for my Hunter had me once again working with my Warrior. I’d be happier if I had a clue what I was doing with her. I’m still primarily running her as a dps, but I should really start blowing the rust off my tank setup but I’m probably even more clueless there.
Either way, the night started with a run through the Pit of Saron. The other PKT who runs a Hunter main wanted to run it for some reason, so myself and our Druid guy jumped in a group and then went looking for a few others.
Of course, what I didn’t quite realize was that it was the non-heroic version, which wasn’t what I was expecting but I’ll take whatever. Unfortunately, I forgot to talk to Jaina way at the begining so I was unable to finish up the quest for there.Â
For the most part, it wasn’t too bad except for the tank rushing ahead and gathering large amounts of mobs at any given point. I mean, I trust our Druid healer because I raid with him regularly, I’m not sure where the tank’s confidence in my buddy’s healing ability came from.Â
Forgemaster Garfrost was funny because I always knew we run behind the boulders he throws but I never really knew why. Then I noticed the permafrost debuff and realized this was the “preview fight” Sindragosa’s fight. Once I realized that, I ran behind the boulder just long enough for the debuff to wear off and then I was back out swinging.
The lead up to Krick and Ick was more interesting than the fight itself. Mainly because the tank decided to aggro 4 of the mobs at once! Which meant the toxic waste pools were everywhere! And while that helped to keep my rage bar full, I knew that meant our healer was working hard to make sure we all stayed up. As for Krick and Ick themselves, Deadly Boss Mods and it’s warnings were all I needed to figure out the fights.
Scourgelord Tyrannus was another one where I knew that if Tyrannus did a link to you, you were supposed to stop dps but I really didn’t know why. In this one, the main annoyance was the tank kept moving Tyrannus to the center of the ice blast areas for some reason. Made it really hard to run away when Rimefang targeted you. Either way I got my The Pit of Saron achievement.
After that, we had two more guild mates join in, a Paladin and a Priest. To allow me to stay on dps, our Druid did the tanking with the Priest taking over the Healer spot. I wouldn’t have minded tanking since it was guild only and they would probably be less inclined to be pissed at me when I mess up but I didn’t argue the point.Â
We started with a Forge of Souls run. Since I had been in there a little more recently, I tried to explain the boss fights, or what I could remember about them. Even then, I rely on DBM to nudge me when I need to. Since the rest of our guildmates don’t really raid, I don’t think they had DBM or hadn’t quite learned the reflexes to automatically do what the DBM warnings say.
Of course, our Druid’s tanking was a bit rusty as well. And sometimes our other two dps targeted something other than what the tank was targeting. Our Paladin dps wasn’t too bad since he didn’t generate as much threat but our Hunter kept pulling mobs off the tank. Even then, he was a bit slow on Feign Death when he did pull aggro. I’d use my Challenging Shout to try and clear the mobs from him but that wasn’t always the best thing since I sometimes pulled too many mobs and our Priest healer then had to suddenly make sure that the tank and myself both stayed up.Â
Actually, I was reminded about how different my play style is after I started doing instances and raids. For instance, there are a few things you learn in 5-man instances and raids, like the fact that if something suddenly appears under your character, run away from it. In this case, I forgot to mention about the frontal cone attack of the boss and while myself and most other raiders would immediately move away from that, our Paladin and Priest stood where they were and continued their actions, causing them both to die.
We probably took a little longer than we should have because of our lower dps and generally rustiness in our given roles, but we did make it through. I actually won the rolls for both items that Bronjahm dropped, Papa’s Brand New Bag and Lucky Old Sun.  I ended up giving our Paladin the Lucky Old Sun. While it was a better tanking weapon than the one I was using, my current tanking weapon was already ilvl 219 while our Paladin’s was an ilvl 200, so it was more of an upgrade for him than for myself.
Then again, I also ended up winning the roll for the Sollerets of Suffering that dropped as well. Now those I kept since my tanking boots were still blue items. Not sure how I won 3 rolls in a row, but it wasn’t like I was purposely nabbing all the gear.Â
Next we did another Forge of Souls run, this time giving us time to talk to Jaina at the begining. Again I tried to explain the fights as best I could. Fortunately, we didn’t have all that many issues except for a few people getting hit by the saronite boulders because they didn’t move fast enough.Â
And that was it for the night. Each run took a bit long so it was getting late when we finally finished the Forge of Souls and we were getting tired. I briefly tried to figure out what to upgrade with all the emblems I had now but I just don’t know at this point. Do I save up to get an awesome trinket? Or a new helm? Or split into a lesser belt and gloves?Â
I’ve also finally taken a good long look at my talent build and I think I can start switching things around. If anything, I also realized my hit rating was giving me something like a 15% chance to hit, which is still less than the maximum for regular attacks, but was way too high for special attacks. I should be able to regem and pull some points out of Precision and use them elsewhere. Shesh, and I remember when I thought it near impossible to just get my Warrior to the 8% hit chance.
And I know I’m still not doing my rotation correctly. I’ve been reading up on it, so I know the theoretically rotation I should be using. Going ahead and doing it will take some getting used to. I’m going to have to either way. My fingers are getting way too tired randomly mashing buttons as it is.
